I had this two years ago and I have no excuse except that it was extremely memorable! Two years is a long but also explains the bad quality grainy photos. I don’t even think I carried an iPhone back then. But here goes…
吉 士酒家 or Old Jesse Restaurant (41 Tianping Lu, near Huaihai Lu, Metro Line 1 Xujiahui Station, Shanghai +86 21-62829260), is an establishment. Ask any foodie who has visited Shanghai and I assure you Old Jesse Restaurant will be the connection between you and him/ her. This place is also so so hard to get a table. The hotel receptionist helped us secure a table two days into our holiday and a table was only available at 11.30am. Specializing in Shanghainese food, the few dishes we ordered made me swoon and declare my love for Shanghainese cuisine. Every dish we ordered made my Mum, sister and I proclaim “so good!” We liked it so much that we took away a box of braised pork for my Dad in Singapore.
Old Jesse’s top dish is the Hong saoro, Red Braised Pork. Succulent juicy pork belly swimming in a dark red thick sauce. Divine.
Shredded chicken in almond chili oil, served cold and topped with cilantro and a pile of red-hot chilis.
Potato Tomato Soup
Jelly sheet noodles in a Crab Meat Gravy. Generous shredded crab in a thick eggy sauce with chewy jelly sheets swimming in it. What an unusual but delightful dish.
