Hong Kong’s legendary Egg Tarts specialist, Tai Cheong Bakery, has once again set up a Pop Up shop in Takashimaya Food Hall (B2). Just like that, cheese tarts was so yesterday and egg tarts from Hong Kong is the food to grab now. Yours truly suffered from a repeated case of Fear of Missing Out when I saw these food bloggers holding the tarts in their hands yesterday. Thanks to LaborMe, this afternoon some Tai Cheong Egg Tarts and Chicken Pie were delivered straight to my office in the East. I really can’t be bothered to go down and queue.
The Egg Tarts and Chicken Pies arrived piping hot. At $1.90 each for the egg tarts ($7.60 for 4) and $2.80 for the chicken pies, these were much cheaper than Bake Cheese tarts and well worth it! Best part: they are best eaten at room temperature because that’s when the butteriness of the crusts really comes through and shines.
The crust of Tai Cheong’s egg tarts is not the flakey sort but rather a solid one. Its’ sturdy, biscuit-like nature held up the smooth egg-y custard so well! Strangely, I preferred this when at room temperature. Warn you ah, very addictive! My colleagues gobbled down two in one shot.
The Chicken Pie consisted of this extremely-buttery short-crust pastry and an equally flavoursome and creamy chicken filling. It reminded me of a much less soup-y version of chicken pot pie. The pastry was soo buttery, so crumbly, it was falling all over me. Love it.
Can’t wait for this to open permanently.
