L’As du Fallafel is widely known to be one of the best Falafel joints in Paris. It is located in the heart of what was once Paris’s most vibrant Jewish neighborhood, the trendy area of Marais. After reading many ravings, not visiting L’As du Fallafel almost felt like a crime. I am glad we followed the hype and dined in the cramp restaurant one afternoon for the pita bread was the fluffiest bread I have ever eaten. Seriously. It bounced away from each other as we tore into it. Luckily, L’As du was pretty generous and for our lunch, we had loads of the fluffy bread served with the two complimentary sauces: a red hot and semi-sweet green sauce.
Aside from the legendary falafels, we also tried other food on the extensive menu. The soft grilled eggplant topped with hummus and salsa was much enjoyed especially with the pita bread.
The classic and legendary Falafel Sandwich (8 euros) contained the requisite super-crisp, garlicky chickpea fritters with creamy hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage (something between slaw and kraut), salted cucumbers, fried eggplant and just-hot-enough harissa. Note to take away, the sandwich costs 2 euros less.
While the sandwich contained a lot of the falafels, they were deep-fried to death. It was undesirably dry. I remembered those in Melbourne to be better. The saving grace has got to be the accompanying vegetables and generous hummus with the fluffy pita bread saved it.
We also ordered the Lamb and Turkey Platter that came filled with much tender pieces of the meat, loads more fibrous vegetables with hummus including deep-fried eggplant and French fries. I was sick of fries at this point but all others on the plate were wonderful.
L’As du Falafel is highly recommended for the unreal fluffy pita bread. Seriously, the bread alone is worth the find.
